News update: Jonathan Owens Tries to ‘Remember’ Wife Simone Biles’ Routines, Says ‘Beam Trips Me Out’
The NFL safety talks about supporting the Olympian during the premiere of ‘Hard Knocks: Training Camp with Chicago Bears’
In the debut episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Chicago Bears, the safety opened up about watching and supporting wife Simone Biles and how he feels about witnessing the considerable skills she performs during competition.
“I like floor [exercise] because you get to see how powerful she is,” Owens, 29, said. “I try to remember her routines.”
He added, “I’m just sitting there watching her, especially when she’s on [balance] beam, and like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ Beam trips me out. I’m like, ‘Babe, there’s no way you all are doing flips and just landing on it, blind landings, all this type of stuff.’ ”
In the premiere, documentary cameras also followed Owens’ brief trip to Paris for the Summer Olympics — something the Bears granted him special permission to do — before returning to Chicago for the remainder of training camp with the team as reflected on being able to have that experience.
“I really, really love to support her at the Olympics,” Owens said of Biles, 27. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
While beam might give him pause, Owens — who signed with the Bears this year after a one year with Green Bay Packers and four seasons with the Houston Texans — is standing behind Biles, no matter what she decides about her future in the sport.
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE for Biles’ cover issue — on newsstands Friday, Aug. 9 — Owens said he’s be on board for “whatever she chooses” when it comes to returning the Olympics for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games. He added, “I’m going to support her one thousand percent.”
“It’s going to depend on how she feels because there’s a lot of sacrifice that comes with it,” Owens said of what Biles’ ultimately decides to do in the future.
