Latest News: “So I’m your mother now” – When Simone Biles’ opened up about the moment her grandparents informed the gymnast about adopting her
Simone Biles once reflected on the moment her grandparents informed the gymnast that they were her parents. Biles and her younger sister Adria were adopted by Ronald and Nellie Biles when they were six and four years old, respectively.
Following their biological mother Shannon’s inability to provide for them due to drug and alcohol addiction, the gymnast and her siblings – Adria, Ashley, and Tevin were enrolled in foster care system. While Biles and Adria were adopted by Ronald and Nellie Biles, Ashley and Tevin were adopted by her great-aunt.
The tedious and lengthy adoption process concluded on November 7, 2003, when the family visited the courthouse. In her autobiography, Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, A Life in Balance, Biles reflected on the evening of that day, when her informed that she had been adopted.
Biles, very young at the time did not fully understand the significance of the events that occurred in court and later greeted Nellie as “Grandma.” Later, Nellie explained to Biles that she was officially adopted and as a result, she was now her mother.
“Good night, Grandma!’ I called as I was skipping out of the kitchen with Adria on my heels,” Biles wrote in her autobiography. “There was something different in her tone. I didn’t know what to expect. ‘You know, girls,’ she said as we stood in front of her, ‘we adopted you both today. So I’m your mother now, and he’—she pointed at my grandpa, who was wiping the table mats—’he’s your father.’”
Further in the autobiography, Biles noted that she finally called her adoptive parents Mom and Dad, realizing she and Adria were now truly at home forever.
