News: Justin Herbert Breaks Patrick Mahomes’ NFL Record During Chargers-Cardinals
The Los Angeles Chargers failed to sustain their momentum from their Week 6 win over the Denver Broncos, as they suffered a 17-15 road loss on Monday to the Arizona Cardinals. But for what it’s worth to Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, he was able to set a new NFL record for becoming the fastest player to accumulate 1,700 pass completions, per Elias Sports (h/t Kris Rhim of ESPN).
Herbert needed just 68 games in the NFL to reach the 1,700 completions mark — one game earlier than previous record-holder Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Justin Herbert is the fastest player in NFL history to 1,700 completions (68 games),” wrote Rhim. “The only other player with 1,700 in fewer than 70 games is Patrick Mahomes (69). Herbert’s 1,700th career completion was to TE Will Dissly in the 2nd quarter”
Unfortunately for Herbert, who was taken by Los Angeles in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2020 NFL draft, his milestone did not happen in a Chargers win. The former Oregon Ducks star racked up 349 passing yards but had zero touchdowns on 27-of-39 completions.
With the Chargers’ offense struggling to find the end zone, Los Angeles turned to kicker Cameron Dicker for their points. Dicker supplied all of the Bolts’ scoring production, as he went 5-for-5, including one that he drained from 59 yards away.
Herbert and the Chargers will look to pick up the pieces and regroup for their Week 8 showdown against the New Orleans Saints at home.
