The system of individualized housing assessments for transgender inmates in U.S. federal prisons has been ended.
Under a new federal directive, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons must now assign housing for inmates strictly based on their biological sex at birth.
The policy removes earlier procedures that considered factors such as gender identity, safety risks, and vulnerability when deciding placement.
The directive also eliminates certain previous accommodations, including pronoun recognition and access to gender-affirming clothing.
As a result, reports indicate that hundreds of transgender women who had been housed in women’s facilities are now being transferred to high-security men’s prisons.
